Just to prepare everyone, this is a rant post. A rant that I just really really really want to RANT ABOUT! It's nothing major, but it kinda got to me today.

As some of you might know from my Facebook, I recently (this Monday) started a new job at post office. It's just temporary for holidays, and I'm pretty happy with it. I like people I work with a lot, so I was thinking of bringing in something.... maybe cookies sometimes. Well today at least 3 people there were talking about how they NEVER EVER EAT ANYTHING THAT WAS PREPARED AT HOME AND BROUGHT IN FOR EVERYONE because you never know if the person preparing it washes their hands, or follows any sanitary/cleanliness standards. So they would only eat something that was prepared commercially....... There goes my idea with bringing something.

All I could think was SERIOUSLY? Do Americans (most of the people there are Americans, the people talking were definitely Americans) are really that spoiled? Grossed out? Narrow minded? I really don't know what else I can categorize it as. I try to respect everyone's little quirks, I sure have a lot of my own, but I think this is going a little overboard. (Just for the disclaimer, I've heard the same thing said before but never with more than one person at a time)

I really wanted to ask them what they do if they go over to someone's house for dinner? Not eat because the host dared to prepare food her/himself? Or watch them prepare it to make sure the sanitary standards were upheld?

  1. Hm, I can imagine there may be some fear of secretly disgruntled co-workers bringing in food laced with marijuana so something like that. I know some businesses don't allow homemade foods from workers or customers for poison concerns here state-side, so many might be used to that restriction. The whole cleanliness thing is absurd. As for eating at someones home, co-workers generally don't get that cosy unless they've been friends for years.

  2. The thing that got to me was the cleanliness concern and "this is just gross" comments. I didn't mean inviting coworkers over, just that what they do if they go to their friends houses, not coworkers.

  4. Hmmm... when I lived in the US I never came across that attitude. In fact, it was encouraged to have homemade stuff. I make stuff for my colleagues here in England and it's always appreciated. In fact, I'm making cupcakes to bring in for tomorrow as my birthday is on Sat. It's custumary for the birthday person to bring in treats on their birthday here. Most people bring in commercial stuff but that's only because they are rubbish cooks or have no time.

  6. But how can we be sure of the cleanliness of the commercially brought goodies. Clearly they haven't seem the documentaries which highlight the low standard of health and safety in some factories.

Anyway homemade goodies always taste nicer especially when butter is used.

  7. LOL with everyone, I totally agree! Just because it's commercial doesn't mean it's clean!I'm still not quire sure what irked me so much... is it the attitude that homemade are worse than commercial? Or the EWWW IT'S SO NASTY phrase? Or the dismissivniness (I don't think this is actually a word) towards hard work that goes into homemade stuff?

  8. I don't know who you were listening to, but I absolutely LOVE homemade foods! The idea that they don't wash their hands or whatever doesn't even cross my mind. I'd MUCH rather have something made from scratch than something picked up at the grocery store or something. Those foods always taste so fake. :/ Bring your cookies in! I'd love to try them! :D

  9. so they'd rather eat something packed full of chemicals that could actually kill them, then something wholesome and nutritious? I say they don't deserve your cookies! (PS send them to me)
